Covington




Covington, post village, capital of Alleghany County, Virginia, 196 west Richmond, 233 Washington City. Situated on Jackson's river, near the junction of Potts creek, where the western navigation of James river and its branches terminates. It has a court house, jail, and other county buildings, 3 churches, 1 Presbyterian, 1 Episcopal, and 1 Methodist, an academy, about 60 dwellings, many of them of brick and handsome, 3 stores, and a number of mechanic shops, and about 310 inhabitants. Its situation among the mountains is beautiful and romantic.
